Story Time
To recognise that hope and trust are values to hold on to even when things don't seem to be going well.
A bag of marshmallows and a child friendly version of the story of Job.
Ask the children to sit in a circle. Tell the story of job, a good man who loved and respected god. He had a lovely family, a nice house and a lot of money. He felt really lucky. ( give each child a marshmallow and tell them NOT to touch it. It's on loan.) 'God is so good to me, I am so lucky' he said. Then one day his wife died, (take away a marshmallow, ) then his children, then his house burned down, then he lost all his animals and his money. As the story goes on take away everyone's marshmallows till there are none left. Tell them your unrest and that they feel disappointed and let down, invite children to talk about things that have happened to them that have left them feeling disappointed let down unhappy. Does this mean that god has stopped loving them?
Finish the story, with no treats in sight. Stress that despite his hurt job ne'er stopped trusting in God’s love. At the end of the story he ended up with MORE than he had to start with. Either give out double marshmallows or even nicer treats.
Ask the children how they felt at different parts of the story. Can they relate this to anything that has happened in their lives?
