Prayer Knots
To explore prayer by making and using prayer knots.
A braiding disc (you can make them out of cardboard or buy a wooden one), selection of
coloured yarns and scissors.
First of all, you need to make a braid. We used a wooden braiding disc, but you can make them out of cardboard. You will need to cut 7 strands of yarn in the colours of your choice. To make your braid, put a knot in one end of the yarns and put the knot through the hole in the braiding disc. Put one strand of yarn in each of the slits in the braiding disc. There should be one empty slit. Hold the disc so the slit sits at 4o’clock (pink arrow). Take the yarn, in the picture (the blue arrow) and lift it over the green and the purple and into the empty slit. Keep doing this, each time moving the empty slit to the 4o’clock position. Once you have completed your braid, make a series of knots. Use your braid with the knots in to pray. Hold your braid in your fingers and, as you reach a knot, take time to pray for someone. As you come to the second knot, give thanks for something. As you reach the next knot, ask for forgiveness or guidance. Use the rest of the knots to support your prayers.
